Interviewing Tips

DO:
  • show up 5-10 minutes early. Give yourself plenty of time to get there with traffic.
  • discuss specific parts of your background that are relevant to the job (ie. tell them why you can do the job and are the best candidate for the position).
  • discuss what you can do for the company, not what they can do for you.
  • give the interview top priority - TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE,
  • show interest in the position - ask intelligent questions that you have prepared ahead of time and gathered during the interview.
  • have energy during the interview.
  • be friendly, they want to hire someone they can get along with.
  • dress appropriately. Dress for the job you want, not the one you already have.
  • look at the interviewer.
  • remember peoples names that you are interviewing with and use their names during the interview.
  • fill out applications completely - not "see resume".
  • be honest - don't fudge answers.
  • thank the interviewer for their time.
  • let the interviewer know you are interested in the opportunityty (ie. Thank you for taking the time to interview me. I am very interested in the position and think I can do a great job for you).

DON'T:
  • do not ask about salary or benefits. We will negotiate better salary and benefits for you.
  • If asked directly, tell them you are more interested in the position and you are sure they will come up with a fair offer. If pushed, tell them your current salary, but that you are open for negotiation.
  • rely on your resume to sell yourself. It is just a piece of paper. People don't hire resumes.
  • don't answer questions with single words - (ie. yes or no, when you are given the chance to briefly explain why you are a good fit).
  • bash your last employer. It only makes you look bad.
  • interrupt the interviewer
  • discuss anything controversial or overly personal (ie. religion, your last divorce, etc, that has nothing to do with the job)
  • ramble about things that were not asked.
  • wear a gallon of perfume or after shave.
  • act like a 'Prima Donna'.
